Toyota Yaris Hybrid (2012) CAR review

Squeezing the Hybrid Synergy Drive into the titchy Yaris was a next logical step for Toyota, which, after more than a decade of fighting the corner for petrol-electric cars, has more than proved its point.
The new 2012 Toyota Yaris Hybrid is the first ever B-segment car to offer full hybrid technology and since the Yaris is the biggest selling Toyota in Europe (2.5 million Since 1999, 368,000 of them in the UK) promises to put more people into hybrids than ever before. Why? Because this version will be no niche product. Toyota reckons 20% of all Yaris sales will go to the Hybrid and it’s spending £3m on advertising in the UK alone to make sure they do.

What’s the 2012 Toyota Yaris Hybrid like to drive?

The Yaris Hybrid gets the tried and trusted Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive but completely re-engineered to fit the smaller car. That means a fully automatic transmission which balances power from the electric motor and engine on a continuously variable basis, with a pure EV mode which can last for up to 1.2 miles or up to 31mph and automatically kicks in from rest.
Accelerate firmly and the engine wails in true CVT fashion but the powertrain is refined and in EV only mode, virtually silent. There’s nothing happening at rest either, so all-in-all the Yaris Hybrid delivers a serene driving experience ideal for urban commutes. The Hybrid handles solidly and corners flat thanks partly to a low centre of gravity but it’s no hot hatch so don’t expect fireworks.
The hybrid drive is arguably the most sophisticated version of the system yet and tailored to suit the way people drive in the real world. So serious energy recovery doesn’t begin in earnest until you touch the brake, rather than showing marked retardation when you lift. Performance is fairly modest, with 0-62mph taking 11.8 seconds while top speed is 103mph.

How about the interior of the Yaris Hybrid?

Seats are comfortable and there’s ample leg and headroom in the back. The boot is good enough for a couple of cabin bags or shopping and the seats fold forward as usual to carry bigger loads. There are three trim levels: T3, T4 and T Spirit sporting slightly higher levels of equipment at each step and part leather upholstery at the top end.
The two higher levels get touch screen control but none get sat-nav as standard. Instruments are simple with a large speedo, fuel gauge and the ‘hybrid system indicator’ to show power use and more important, regeneration.

Is it safe?

The safety of the Toyota Hybrid System is well proven and the Yaris has a five-star Euro NCAP rating. All versions are equipped with seven airbags including twin-chamber front airbags and a driver’s knee airbag as well as ABS, EBD, brake assist, stability control and we couldn’t suppress a chuckle at traction control.

How about the technical stuff on the new Toyota Yaris Hybrid?

The Hybrid differs from the standard Yaris with a new frontal treatment and smoother underbody. This was done partly to improve cooling but also to achieve a class-leading drag coefficient of 0.286.
The size of the DOHC Atkinson cycle engine has been reduced back down to the original 1497cc from the current Prius size of 1797cc and is 50mm shorter. The engine produces 73bhp at 4,800rpm and 82lb ft torque from 3600rpm-4400rpm. The electric motor, inverter and NiMH battery pack are all smaller and lighter than before though the battery is more efficient than that of the Yaris and recharges more quickly.
It also fits neatly under the rear seat without pinching any interior space. The electric motor can potentially develop 60bhp and 125lb ft torque but the most power you’ll ever see from the two combined is 98bhp. The engine and electric motor drive through a power split device which automatically apportions the power from each in the most economical way.

Does it deliver?

In a word, yes. The combined consumption figure is 80.7mpg and with two blokes in the car we managed a best over one route of 78.5mpg, which is a lot closer than you can get to official figures in some cars. The official urban figure shoots up to 91.1 mpg because of the advantage given by the hybrid drive.
CO2 is 79g/km combined on the 15-inch wheel and 85g/km on the 16-inch wheel available on the upper two trim levels. Prices start at £14,995 for the base model rising to £16,995 for the T Spirit. Best seller should be the £15,895, T4.

Do we like it?

It’s hard not to. Although the wailing CVT power delivery is a real thrill-killer as always, the Yaris Hybrid is such a clever package and promises genuinely frugal motoring. It doesn’t deliver the raw driving pleasure that other conventional cars might but it’s roomy and relaxing to drive and is the ideal urban commuter or second car. Perhaps best of all, it’s a hybrid that doesn’t look weird.

Renault Fluence 2,0 Privilege

Big family saloons are about as popular these days as tape decks or public phones - so why has Renault decided to use an old design philosophy in the current automotive market? We drove the Fluence 2,0 Privilege to try and answer the question.
Styling wise, the Fluence is a combination of French flair and quirkiness, depending on your point of view. For example, take the beautiful rear quarter design of the car and compare it to the face only a mother can love. The side profile does a nice coupe-like impression but the strange protrusions found at the bottom of the doors spoil the picture somewhat. Be prepared to warn fuel station attendants not to lift the wiper blades off the windscreen as this action will remove paint from the bonnet rear lip.
Inside, the theme continues with a trendy instrument binnacle containing difficult-to-read dials (due to the vision angle and colour palette used), fashionable centre console and then the bulky square navigation screen blemishing the clean look. At least a remote is provided to fire up the standard TomTom navigation system.
The leather seats are not the most supportive and the driver feels perched on top of the steering wheel rather than behind it in the classic Renault driving position. Roominess in the back is good but could have been excellent if some of the vast boot space was relinquished for more rear legroom.
The Privilege model sampled is powered by a 2,0 litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated powerplant delivering 105 kW of power, driving the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Unfortunately, the engine lacks low down torque and the gearbox needs to be used regularly to make swift progress. The power advantage over the base model’s 1,6 litre is less evident than expected. Maybe a better choice for Renault would have been their 1,4 turbo engine found in the Megane, which should give more low-down torque as well as a fuel-consumption benefit?
Driving in the city explains the new trend of moving to smaller MPV or SUVs for family transport. The Fluence feels big and cumbersome which makes parking at your local supermarket a problem. Where the Fluence really excels is in open-road cruising. Marketing departments will always boast about the "big car" feel of their new small hatchback. Tuning suspension can help but a long wheelbase as found on the Fluence gives it a physical advantage. Miles are happily lapped up at motorway speeds while the occupants stay calm and relaxed. Just a pity that no cruise control option exists.
This brings us to the Fluence’s trump card: price. The Privilege model retails for R244 900 with the entry-level Expression dipping just under R200 000. In this price bracket there is no competitor to the Fluence when considering the size and specification level. If you are in the market for an affordable, large family saloon, it could tick all the boxes. Throw in a five-year/100 000 km service plan as standard and Renault may just have spotted a gap in the overpopulated automotive market.
Specification
  • Engine: 2,0 litre, 16 valve, multipoint fuel injection
  • Power: 105 kW at 6 000 r/min
  • Torque: 195 N.m at 3 750 r/min
  • Combined European cycle fuel consumption: 7,8 litres/100 km
  • CO2 figure: 184 g/km
  • Acceleration: 0-100 km/h in 10,4 seconds
  • Top speed: 195 km/h

Renault's Pulse

Renault has unveiled the Pulse, an entry-level car to form part of its line-up in India. It is the third Renault vehicle to be launched in India after the Fluence sedan and Koleos SUV.

The car is based on the platform of the Nissan Micra and makes full use of Renault's alliance with Nissan. That said, the Pulse was given design modifications at Renault’s design centre in Mumbai while it is produced at the Renault-Nissan manufacturing plant in Chennai.

Powering the front wheels is a 1,5-litre dCi diesel engine. Although no performance figures have been claimed, expect a relatively low fuel consumption figure.

The Pulse will be shown to the general public at the New Delhi Motor Show in January 2012, where Indians will be able to place their first orders.

A spokesperson for Renault South Africa confirmed that there are no current plans to offer the Pulse in South Africa.

Renault officially unveils Alpine A110-50 Concept

Renault has decided to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Alpine A110 by knocking together an eagerly awaited successor. The result is the Renault Alpine A110-50 Concept – a car that the company claims is aimed squarely at performance and driving enjoyment.
The concept’s svelte styling is a collaborative effort between car designer Yann Jarselle and Renault’s concept and show car director Axel Breun. The two interpreted many of the original A110’s stylistic features while integrating various cues from the DeZir concept – a showcase put forward by Laurens van den Acker, senior vice-president of corporate design, to show the direction in which Renault’s future design language is headed.
"For everybody on the team, it was a dream come true to work on an Alpine concept car. We wanted to put this car firmly in the modern day, while resonating with its heritage", said van den Acker.
The A110-50’s design isn’t just about eye-catching aesthetics, though. Much of the car’s design has been directed at creating ground effect – minimizing the need for fins and other ungainly downforec-generating paraphernalia, while the air intakes on each side of the car, in addition to echoing the ducts on the rear wheel arches of the original A110, act as cooling for the gearbox (right-hand side) and engine (left-hand side).
The body has been crafted from carbon fibre and sits on a tubular chassis that has evolved from the underpinnings of the Megane Trophy racer, helping to provide the concept with the requisite torsional stiffness required of a high performance car while keeping the kerb weight down to just 880 kg. The blue chosen for the concept reflects that of the original car’s “Alpine Blue” livery while scissor doors and hinged bodywork sections fore and aft allow easier access to the car’s minimalist cabin and mechanicals.
Power is provided by a mid-rear-mounted 3,5-litre V6 that sends power to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential. Mated with a six-speed semi-automatic transmission, this unit develops 298 kW and 422 N.m of torque. Renault has not provided performance figures, but the combination of V6 power and the aforementioned sub-tonne kerb weight should make for seriously brisk performance, especially as the stopping power is provided by ventilated discs measuring 356/330 mm grabbed by six-pot callipers up front and four-pot items at the rear.

New Rexton revealed

SsangYong lifted the wraps off its facelifted Rexton SUV at the recent Busan Motor Show in South Korea. The firm hopes that a more upmarket and conventional cosmetic makeover will give the car a competitive edge when it arrives here in October.
Developed over the last two years at a cost of R 1-billion in terms of research and development, the facelifted Rexton (dubbed the Rexton W) features a more upmarket overall look that incorporates a rectangular chrome-louvred grille flanked by swept-back headlamps, prominent wheel arches, a forward-raked D-pillar and sculpted taillamps that flow into the rear arches.
On the international market, the new Rexton is powered by a 2,0-litre turbodiesel unit developing 114 kW and 367 N.m of torque coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission sourced from Mercedes-Benz. Models bound for South Africa will contine to be powered by the current Rexton’s 2,7-litre turbodiesel unit which produces 121 kW and 340 N.m of torque. Despite its aesthetic move upmarket, the Rexton's underpinnings remain essentially untouched, meaning that it should retain the off-road capability that is one of the present model's strong points.
SsangYong didn’t go into detail regarding the new Rexton’s specification, describing it only as “extensive” in its press release. The firm was, however at pains to point out that the new car is well equipped on the safety features front with the likes of electronic stability control, active roll-over protection, tyre pressure monitoring and an ultrasonic warning system fitted as standard.
Upon its arrival in South Africa, the Rexton W will be sold via a new network of dealers being established alongside existing Mahindra dealers in order to provide a more extensive sales and support network
