Developed over the last two years at a cost of R 1-billion in terms of research and development, the facelifted Rexton (dubbed the Rexton W) features a more upmarket overall look that incorporates a rectangular chrome-louvred grille flanked by swept-back headlamps, prominent wheel arches, a forward-raked D-pillar and sculpted taillamps that flow into the rear arches.
On the international market, the new Rexton is powered by a 2,0-litre turbodiesel unit developing 114 kW and 367 N.m of torque coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission sourced from Mercedes-Benz. Models bound for South Africa will contine to be powered by the current Rexton’s 2,7-litre turbodiesel unit which produces 121 kW and 340 N.m of torque. Despite its aesthetic move upmarket, the Rexton's underpinnings remain essentially untouched, meaning that it should retain the off-road capability that is one of the present model's strong points.
SsangYong didn’t go into detail regarding the new Rexton’s specification, describing it only as “extensive” in its press release. The firm was, however at pains to point out that the new car is well equipped on the safety features front with the likes of electronic stability control, active roll-over protection, tyre pressure monitoring and an ultrasonic warning system fitted as standard.
Upon its arrival in South Africa, the Rexton W will be sold via a new network of dealers being established alongside existing Mahindra dealers in order to provide a more extensive sales and support network
